ANNE & PHILIP BEAUMONT
Anne and Philip Beaumont, who are brother and sister, have been attending Fag Ends on and off for several years in an attempt to stop smoking. Anne was a 30 a day cigarette smoker and Philip was a 40-50 a day rolling tobacco smoker. In previous quit attempts, both Anne and Philip had used various nicotine replacement products such as gum, lozenge and inhalator in a bid to quit their habit, however, they both chose to use 16 hour patches on their successful attempt. Anne also said that when she was really struggling to refrain from smoking, she would use the inhalator as back-up.
Anne told me that just prior to their mother dying, she looked Anne in the eye and begged her to give up smoking, and this was the deciding factor that made them try to give up. So, even though it has taken them five attempts at quitting, this has made them even more determined to stay stopped after having made a promise to their mother and neither of them could face going back to ‘day one’ again!
Anne feels the benefits of stopping smoking are food tastes better, she has more money and best of all, her 15 year old son no longer has a cough! Philip also remarked that his smoker’s cough went about 5 weeks after quitting.
They stated that coming for support and advice really benefited them, and the fact that the Fag End groups are always situated locally suited them and they always were made to feel welcome, with a friendly, informal service.
Anne and Philip have now been quit for 14 months and their sister, Louisa, who also attended Fag Ends, has been quit for 18 months, so the house is certainly smoke free.
